How much does a flying instructor make on average?
    Q. As somebody who wants to become a professional pilot and take a job as a full time flying instructor, I'm wondering how much a flying instructor makes? The training after all is very expensive and I'd need any position to pay enough to make sure I have a return on my investment! Thanks for the info so far... I have to admit that the whole reason for wanting a job as an instructor is that I love the smaller, slower aircraft and actually seeing the scenery! I want ot be able to share that with others by instructing them. Flying a giant taxi service from A-B as an airline pilot is not my ultimate goal. I guess I need to think about this very hard!

    A. I was an Instructor at a small Part 141 school in Florida for nearly 6 years, from Jan 1999 to Aug 2005the last 2 as Assistant Chief Instructor. There was no basic salary, flight pay was $18/hr, ground school $15/hr. I also did some flying for the Forestry Service and US Fish & Widlife - with all that taken into consideration, if I made $200/week it was a good week! (Additional paperwork/student costs introduced since 9/11 hurt a lot and drastically reduced our student numbers from Europe). If the weather was bad, or students weren't available it wasn't unknown to make either nothing or maybe $50 a week - and that was being available 7 days a week and evenings for night flights - ie I couldn't take another job to help out! It's NOT a job… [cont.]

What causes flying insects to grow in or live in the soil of houseplants?
    Q. I try to use only the best soil with my houseplants and put insect spray on them to prevent flying critters. Yet I still get them. What attracts or causes these insects (black and tiny) and what can I do about them?

    A. The little black flying bugs you see around your potted plants are known as "Soil Gnats" or "Fungus Gnats". I will have to disagree with the above poster stating for you to drown your pots twice a week to rid the gnats. This is exactly just the opposite of what should be done. Fungus gnats thrive in moist, humid conditions, just what they have in an indoor environment. By soaking the soil twice a week, the eggs and larvae will thrive and multiply rapidly. The 4 instars of the gnat (egg, larvae, pupa, adult) only takes 3 weeks to complete. A female can lay upwards of 150 - 200 eggs before dying during her 7 days of life. The best remedy is to not water so much. Let the top 1" of soil dry out in between watering's (the larvae live in the top… [cont.]

What is the difference between flying the different airlines?
    Q. I am not that experienced with flying and am looking to fly to Salt Lake City from Dallas. Is there a difference between the different airlines?
    Asked by zerocool - Tue Jan 20 18:29:22 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

    A. There really isn't much of a difference. I prefer Continental because I get the cheapest flights with them (my closest airport is a hub of theirs) and I think their service is good (although they are rumored to be an airline that cancels flights more frequently than others). The bottom line is, no matter what airline you chose for a domestic flight, I am sure it will be fine. All airlines can suffer the same issues (canceled/delayed flights, baggage loss, scheduling issues, etc). If I were you, I would pick whatever flight/airline fits your schedule/times best and is at the lowest cost.
