Contemporary skepticism (or scepticism) is loosely used to denote any questioning attitude, or some degree of doubt regarding claims that are elsewhere taken for granted.

The word skepticism can characterise a position on a single claim, but in scholastic circles more frequently describes a lasting mind-set. Skepticism is an approach to accepting, rejecting, or suspending judgment on new information that requires the new information to be well supported by evidence. Individuals who proclaim to have a skeptical outlook are frequently called skeptics, often without regard to whether it is philosophical skepticism or empirical skepticism that they profess.

In religion, skepticism refers to 'doubt concerning basic religious principles (such as immortality, providence, and revelation).' (Merriam–Webster)

In classical philosophy, skepticism (or scepticism) is the teachings and the traits of the 'Skeptikoi', a school of philosophers of whom it was said that they 'asserted nothing but only opined.' (Liddell and Scott) In this sense, philosophical skepticism, or Pyrrhonism, is the philosophical position that one should suspend judgment in investigations.

are there any indisputable objections to philosophical skepticism?
Q. has anyone proven it false? what do you think about skepticism?

A. Only the sceptics themselves put their "philosophical" position into serious doubt. They are absolutely certain that no really knows anything for sure. How the heck can they be so sure, when they are among all those people who can't know anything for sure? In short, no sceptic is sceptical about his or her scepticism. That's kind of odd don't you think, especially since "sceptics" expect their automechanics to know how to fix their cars and their garbage collectors to know how to collect their garbage --- and thousands of other people to know their jobs while they remain "aloof sceptics"l Kevin

Christians: do you employ a balance of skepticism and gullibility in your faith?
Q. Being too skeptical means you re not going to believe enough dogma and being too gullible means you re going to believe the assertions of con artists and scammers like Benny Hinn, Joseph Smith and L. Ron Hubbard, right? Where does the balance come from? How do you know; do you guys believe this holy spirit thingy guides you with this as well?

A. I wonder how much of your advice would apply to atheists themselves, who take such concepts as consistency and completeness of logic, causality or objective reality on faith alone.

Skepticism is a method of intellectual caution, suspended judgment, and pursuing knowledge through systematic doubt and continual testing.

  • Scepticism is the first step towards truth.
  • History is replete with examples of what happens when any group of authorities do not have to answer to empirical evidence but are free to define truth as they see fit. None of the examples has a happy ending. Why should it be otherwise with therapy?
  • A danger sign of the lapse from true skepticism into dogmatism is an inability to respect those who disagree.
